Teachers' guide to using the site

|

This site is very much a work in progress.  We will be developing some ideas for activities based on the resource but it will take time to build up, especially as there is more merit in lessons and activities that teachers have used and trialled in class.   In the initial stages, we shall try to provide some ideas and starting points and one or two activities, but this will be added to over time as schools share what they have developed.

Please visit the 'About Us' section of the site to see the fundamental beliefs and principles we are operating under.

The central resource pack has been prepared by Dr Samantha Riches from Lancaster University.  We felt it was important that the core material had academic credibility and was well researched and presented, given the importance of St George as a figure sometimes invoked by groups with extreme political views.  We will give some ideas for activities based on the St George material appropriate for different Key Stages, and some ideas for celebrating St George's Day.

The other aspect of the site is My England. In this section, we hope to provide starting points for teachers to encourage an exploration of the diversity of English identities.  Activities here will be centred around pupils considering their own sense of identity and belonging.

The ultimate aim of the site and the resources presented here is to help children and young people develop a sense of themselves as belonging to England and having a stake in it as citizens.  We would like them - and their teachers - to feel confident in celebrating that belonging and in acknowledging the complex and interwoven histories and traditions that have brought us to this point.
